Coach Ben has been involved with basketball his entire life. He played at local Shadow Mountain High School where he was a a member of back-to-back final four teams during his junior and senior seasons. He received a scholarship to Grand Canyon University and played one season for the Antelopes. Following his freshman season, he transferred to Arizona State University to continue the pursuit of his bachelors degree.Coach Ben has been coaching for over eight years and created AZPB in 2010. He has coached for various AAU and high school programs throughout the state including Arizona Premier Academy, Arizona's Best, Arizona's Ultimate, Chaparral HS and Tesseract HS. He has also been mentored by great basketball minds including former GCU and University of Arizona head coach Russ Pennell, former NBA general manager Todd Eley, NBA Hall of Famer Bob Lanier and has worked extensively with trainers throughout the state including Kyle Dodd, former ASU guard. His teams have captured multiple tournament championships and he has led seven different teams to AAU state championships. His goal is to pursue a coaching career in either college or professional basketball.Ben recently accepted the position as Arizona AAU Girls Chairman and he hopes to continue to grow AAU basketball in Arizona and provide female players with an opportunity to pursue their dreams of higher level basketball. He is excited to create new relationships with the local Arizona programs and their coaches while providing outlets that will enhance girls basketball throughout the state.He currently resides in Phoenix and is happily married to his wife, Maureen. She went on to play four years of college basketball at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, graduating with a degree in Political Science and Speech Communications and earning several academic all-conference and all-conference honorable mention basketball honors, as well as setting and still holding the school's single-game rebounding record. Sheila attended graduate school at the University of St. Thomas and then taught fifth grade and coached in Minnesota until moving to Arizona in 1997. Sheila works from home as an independent proofreader and has been married to Brian, who played college baseball at St. Olaf, for 21 years. They have four children- Emily, a freshman basketball player at St. Olaf, Ben, a sophomore at Pinnacle HS, Tyson, a freshman at Pinnacle HS, and Claire, a fifth-grader at Desert Trails. Sheila has been coaching club, youth and high school sports, both boys and girls, in Minnesota and now Arizona for over 23 years.
